2019 Oscars Best Picture Challenge

January is proving to be a very cold, dreary and rainy month here in Connecticut! While the rain and overcast sky beckons me home to my Northwest roots, it feels like pure torture after living on California’s sunny central coast.

But the dreary weather presents a fun opportunity to take a challenge!

This week’s Golden Globe Awards kicked off one of my favorite seasons – award season!!!! Can you hear my Oprah voice??? Let’s try again – award season!!!!!! The award “season” is a trifecta of the Golden Globes (Jan. 6), Screen Actors Guild Awards (Jan. 27), Academy Awards (Feb. 24). The Emmy’s, for whatever reason, come later in the year.

One of my best friends and I started an “Oscars Best Picture Challenge” several years ago. The challenge is simple – try to watch all of the Best Picture nominated films (around 10), usually within a one month time frame. It’s a fun and daunting challenge – spreading out the films over a few short weeks and scouring which theaters are showing what. Mixing it up with matinees, double movie days, whatever it takes! It’s even easier in this modern age of streaming services, with several of these films on Amazon Prime or Netflix.

The challenge keeps us entertained during these dreary weeks, but most importantly challenges us to watch films with genres and plot lines we normally wouldn’t see. I encourage you to try this challenge with your friends or significant other – it’s a lot of fun!

How To Get Started:

The Academy Award nominations are out!  Here are the movies:

  1. A Star is Born
  2. BlacKkKlansman
  3. Black Panther
  4. Bohemian Rhapsody
  5. Green Book
  6. Roma
  7. The Favourite
  8. Vice

Bonus Points:

  1. Beautiful Boy
  2. BlacKkKlansman
  3. Can You Ever Forgive Me?
  4. Crazy Rich Asians
  5. If Beale Street Could Talk ‘
  6. Mary Queen of Scots
  7. Mary Poppins Returns

So, what movies have you seen? I’d love to know what’s your favorite so far! Vice and the Green Book are mine.

  1. I’ve seen three: Crazy Rich Asians, Mary Poppins Returns, Black Panther. I would love to join you in this challenge again! So many wonderful looking films and so many seem pretty important in the present world, which is such a common part of the Oscars 😀

  2. I’ve seen Crazy Rich Asians (meh, in my opinion. I read the book as well…it’s a beach read and the movie is the same) and Green Book. I loved Green Book, even though it’s been criticized as being too basic/obvious/corny in regard to depicting an interracial friendship in 1960’s America. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali were both incredible and I like a feel-good movie in the Oscars line up. I really want to see The Favourite and Can You Ever Forgive Me?
